Weather Statement

 

This event is scheduled to take place rain or shine. In the event of a high impact weather event which would flood roads or force road closures we would cancel the event for the safety of our riders. Any announcement cancelling the event would be made by 4 AM Sunday via this page and our Facebook and Twitter accounts. (Otherwise, there will be no further weather announcements.)

 

Participant Guidebook 

 

A new Guidebook for 2017 will be made available over the summer. If you like, you can download the 2016 Participant Guidebook for reference. Everything you want and need to know about the Back Roads Century in one handy place (how to get there, where to park, ride starts, cuesheets, rest stop information, Shepherdstown resources, and more!

 

Ride Date

 

The ride will be held, rain or shine, on Sunday, September 17, 2017.


Ride Start


The ride starts at Shepherd University, 
540 West Campus Drive, Shepherdstown, WV 25443; about 60-90 minutes north-west of Washington, DC.

 

Ride Distances 


There are five courses for riders of all abilities - 27, 45, 51, 63, and 101

 

Everyone is Welcome to Ride 


This event is open to the public and all cycling enthusiasts are invited to attend.

  • Cue Sheet showcasing historic regions
  • Mechanical Support along the routes

  • End of Ride Celebration at Bellevue Manor with catered meal and entertainment after your ride

  • Saturday pre-rides, events, and entertainment

After You Register Online


You will receive two e-mail confirmations - your order confirmation and your registration receipt.

We will mail you your rider number to your home in early September. 


Event Capacity


Registration will close when we reach 2000 riders. We sell out every year and we expect to sell out again in 2017.


Ride Starting Times


There is a rolling start (show and go) from 7:00am to 9:30am. Please adhere to the following recommended starting times so that riders of the same ability are grouped together. This will help to avoid congestion on the road and at rest stops.
 This may be subject to change depending on the number of rides we offer.


7:00 am - 7:30 am - 100 Mile English Century Riders
7:30 am - 8:00 am - 63 Mile Metric Century Riders
8:00 am - 8:30 am - 45 and 51 Mile (Half Century) Riders
8:30 am - 9:00 am - 27 Mile Riders
 

Route Riding Times


Routes are open from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm. Be sure to return before 6:00 pm, when the route services will close; and start early if you plan on doing the 100 mile ride!


Rider Check-In

 

If you registered online by August 31st, you do not have to stop at the registration area before you ride. Simply apply your rider number to your bike, apply your wristband; then get rolling. We want you to enjoy your day without standing in line.

 

Rest Stops

 

All rides will have designated rest stops along each route. There will be water, sports drinks, fruit, snacks and other food. Rest stops are noted on your cue sheet and the distance between them differs, depending upon which course you choose - 27, 45, 51, 63, or 101 miles. Generally, they’re anywhere from 15 to 25 miles apart. You should review your cue sheet for the exact mileage.

 

End of Ride Celebration


After the ride join us for our “End of Ride Celebration”, featuring mouthwatering food prepared by local restaurants and entertainment that will have you up on your feet even after riding for hours. This year’s celebration will take place at Bellevue Manor, a historic venue with great views overlooking the Potomac – you won’t want to miss it. This is included in your registration fee.


Back Roads Century T-shirts

 

When registration opens, you can order your Back Roads Century t-shirt during registration or you can order online in our store.

 

Where do I get my t-shirt?

 

T-shirts must be picked up the day of the ride at our Information Desk.  If you are unable to make the ride, t-shirts can be mailed to you for a fee upon request.

 

Back Roads Century Jersey

 

We will have a beautiful new design for the 2017 Back Roads Century jersey.  They will be available in men's short sleeve and women's short sleeve (both 3/4 zipper), and in women's tank top. When registration opens, you can order your jersey during registration or purchase from our online store.

 

Jerseys are custom-made in advance of the ride.  If you place your order by July 22nd your jersey will be available for pickup at the Century.  We are not mailing jerseys in advance of the Century - pickup only.

 

If you place your order after July 22nd we'll mail the jersey to your home in November 2017 and will charge for postage costs.

 

Information Desk 


We'll have an information desk near the ride start by the registration table and it will be staffed from 7:00 am – 10:00 pm. After that the Information desk moves to Bellevue Manor, site of the after-party, and will be staffed 10:30 AM - 6:00 PM.

  

What You Need to Bring


You must pin your rider number and attach it to your bike for identification by our Support and Gear (SAG). You must wear your wristband for identification at our rest stops; and at the End of Ride Celebration. Helmets are required.

 

Travel and Lodging 


Shepherdstown, WV is approximately 60-90 minutes north west of Washington, DC. Many riders will stay overnight in the area, making a weekend of exploring the quaint town of Shepherdstown and the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the surrounding area. We will have reserved hundreds of rooms at area hotels for those early-bird arrivals and will be offering free bike rides and a variety of entertainment options the day before the Back Roads Century Ride itself. Information is coming. (If not staying overnight, riders will simply get up a little early and drive to the ride start the morning of the Back Roads Century.)

 

Parking 


Parking is at Shepherd University, 301 N. King St., Shepherdstown, WV 25443. 


Bicycle Repair

 

Mechanics will be on hand to perform repairs and adjustments at the ride start, and at rest stops along the routes. 


Support and Gear (SAG)

 

We will have support vehicles traveling along all routes throughout the day. Their official name is “Support and Gear”, more commonly known as “SAG”. 

 

Safety Rules and Guidelines 


Helmets are required in order to participate in the Back Roads Century. You will be traveling on public roads in West Virginia, and you must obey all traffic laws pertaining to the state.


Rider Behavior Policy


You must agree to abide to our Rider Behavior Policy in order to participate in the Back Roads Century.
